The wedding car is one of the symbols of marriage, the leaving of old lives and the beginning of a life's journey together.

The wedding car normally arrives at the church festooned with ribbons: in informal ceremonies, the bride and groom's guests also routinely decorate it shortly before they leave.

When you are planning your wedding car decoration, you should consider whether your friends are going to go all out to decorate the car themselves.

A formal wedding car can be more lavishly treated than their soon-to-be-festooned-with-tin-cans relatives.

The wedding car decorations will consist of large amounts of ribbon: think of all the ribbon you have ever used, and then double it.

Wedding car decoration can extend from the front of the bonnet to the top of the windshield, and from the boot to the top of the back window. That's a lot of ribbon, especially since these ribbons will be attached to the car by large bows, also made or ribbon.

Still, it does look very beautiful when it glides up the path towards the church.

After your marriage, your friends and family will probably cover your entire going-away car in rubbish.

It is a wedding tradition that the bride and groom drive way from the ceremony with the wedding car decorated in tin cans and plastic banners (usually saying ‘just married’).

If you have planned your wedding car decoration, and come out of the church to find that those plans have to be put to one side, try and take it with good grace.
