The Spirit of Christmas

Christmas traditions have grown and changed over the years, but one Christmas tradition that has its roots deep in history is that of Santa Clause.

Many movies and stories have been written and enacted telling different tales of Santa's Christmas history and the story of how he came to deliver Christmas gifts to all good girls and boys each Christmas morning.

Throughout Christmas history, there has been much speculation by children and adults alike as to how the story of Santa Claus started.

The legend of Santa Claus can actually be traced back hundreds of years to a monk named St. Nicholas.

It is believed that he was born sometime around 280 to 300 A.D. in what is now known as modern day Turkey.

It is said that St. Nicholas had inherited wealth when both of his parents died of the plague. He is then credited with giving away this inheritance while traveling the countryside to help the sick and the poor.

Through the years, the image and story of Santa Clause has changed with the changing Christmas traditions.

The Santa Clause most remembered in America in the most recent years of Christmas history is the image drawn by artist Haddon Sundblom, illustrator for the Coca-Cola company.

Mr. Sundblom drew a series of Santa images  Coke's Christmas advertisements until 1964.

The company still holds the trademark for the Coca-Cola Santa design.

The image of Santa Clause laughing merrily while giving out Christmas gifts has become one of our most enduring and lovable Christmas images.

Whether a person is 2 or 82, the legend of Santa still takes hold of most of us at Christmas time and adds joy to the holiday season for young and old alike.
