Ancient Christmas Roots to the Present
The Christmas traditions that Christians celebrate
today actually has ancient roots in Paganism. Known as
Christmas, Yule and Saturnalia, this celebration is all about
life and love and family.
Though modern day celebration
of Christmas has more faith based facets than the festivals
from which it evolved, the basis for this rich part of Christmas
history is still there.
Saturnalia was an early Roman celebration of the
god Saturn.
It fell during the winter solstice and eventually
was extended to encompass that festival as well. This
is one of the earliest celebrations in Christmas history.
It is a popular theory that Pope Julius I chose December
25, the middle of the winter solstice,
because he wanted to bring
a more Christian focus to Christmas and Christmas traditions. |
