In the 1930s, even though at the time it was the middle of
the Great Depression, it was extremely popular to put cartoon
characters such as Mickey Mouse on Christmas cards.
This was due to the sudden burst in popularity of animated
films. Once again, this had very little to do with the tradition
Christmas season. In the 1950s, people started to use more
and more of the humorous cards and many of these featured
Santa Claus for nearly the first time.
These humorous cards took a surge in popularity, as people
loved to chuckle at the cards. This streak continued on until
the 1960s, but can still be seen quite often today.
In the 1990s, things took a turn towards the more traditional
side of the custom. People sent Christmas greeting cards featuring
snow, Santa Claus, and Christian versions of greeting cards
came in to stay. Cards featuring scenes from the birth of
Jesus were received very well among the public.
