Your guest of honour may not remember this day, but that should not inhibit you from holding a party to celebrate your baby's birthday.

Decoration and celebration will probably need to be geared towards the older members of the celebration, but you should not worry, as with a few twists on a normal birthday party, baby birthday decoration can be made to work both for you and for the little one. For a baby's first birthday party, you should consider how well behaved and sociable your child really is. Too much excitement can reduce even the best-tempered baby to tears and worse.

If Baby really is an angel at all times, then you might consider having the party in a hall or park, and then the worries of baby birthday decoration can be left to a professional organised. If they are temperamental (and most one-year-olds are like this), then a home party, with you organising the baby birthday decoration, is probably the best idea.

You may want to think about whether your party will have a theme or not. Your child will not remember any of it, so be aware that anything you do for the baby birthday decoration must also please you.

A teddy bear picnic theme, for example, may be best left for when the baby is older. Instead, if you do really want a theme, you can pick out decorations with your favourite animal on them, or with something easily available, such as cars and trucks.

Toys such as cardboard boxes cut and painted to look like cars, for example, or beach balls, can provide all of the party entertainment that your baby and guests will need. Babies are easy to entertain because they have active imaginations. Just make sure that there is enough to go around.
